Where I am, The Beginning

December 9th, 2014 at 12:51 pm

Figure this is the best use of my first real blog post, to give an idea of where I am at right now. Not very happy about it, but accountability is part of the reason I am doing this.

Money In:
Salary: $50,000 a year
Side Work: Between $ 150 and $350 a week
Total: Average of $2,500 a month ( after taxes and 401k contribution)

Money Out:
Rent: $550
Car/Insurance: $530
Student Loan: $170
Groceries:$200
Phone/Utilities:$150
Entertainment:$200
Gas/Upkeep: $150
Total: $1950 ( higher this month due to holidays)

Accounts:
Checking: $650 ( Most bills already paid this month, outside car, and still have one more check coming)

Savings 1: $1,245 ( Not great, but considering it only had about $200 a little over a month ago, I am happy with this)

Savings 2: $72 ( This is just a 52 week challenge account that will be used as additional EF, and hopefully can turn into a vacation fund one day)

401k: $9,987 ( This is the most embarrassing to me. I have been employed basically since 2003 ( outside of 2007 through 2009 when i went back to school), but either contributed the bare minimum or never even signed up in past. I now contribute 12 %)

I am sure there are things I left out, but this is basically where I am now, and back as recently as October I was spending over $700 on food alone, so I am trying to clean budget up. If there is anything I should add, or suggestions in general, please let me know.

(P.S. - Because someone asked earlier, I am not married yet, but am in a fairly new but serious relationship ( she is actually very good with saving, and part of the reason I saw the need to change) so some of food costs include 2 people

It seems you are definitely making good changes. And saving 12% of your retirement will add up! Keep it up.

Thanks. The 12% hurts the paycheck, but I see it as sort of a stupid tax for not investing sooner. It is nice to see it starting to grow.

You're doing a great job! Can you shop around for cheaper car insurance?

What kinds and amounts of debts do you have? How about any car payments and health insurance? Does the phone include cell phone and landline or just one? If just one, is there a separate bill for one of those? Can you refinance the student loan? Can you refinance the car? What kind of entertainment cost $200 a month? Do you have allocations somewhere for car tags, property taxes, and license and other regular but not monthly expenses? As far as food goes, can you take lunch, coffee, etc. to work? That could seriously help you to keep your food budget in check. Sorry for all the questions. I thought I would just give you some possible ideas of where to cut back.

Oops. I just realized you put car payments in your list. My bad.

Health insurance is through work, and all I have is the cell phone. I have pretty good rate on car and done in 2 years so I am going to ride it out, and hopefully not have another car payment for a while after that. The other expenses are grouped into the upkeep category, though I will probably have to add more for taxes and tags

I don't think you are in bad shape, you have $550 per month left to use towards your goals. I suggest you set up automatic transfers to savings for at least some of that $550.

    Also...no credit card debt! Smile

How much do you owe on your student loans?

Best of luck to you with your new relationship. And she is good with saving! I like her already.

I still owe about $12,000 in student loans. I have an automatic transfer of $150 each paycheck right now set. The one area I am ok is that I do not have credit card debt. Luckily when I was at my worst, I was not going to get any decent credit card options so that saved me from myself.

Good on you. You've already taken several positive steps forward. Delighted GF is good with savings and motivated you to take a look at possible changes. Signing on to employer's retirement plan is a significant step forward. Do you know exactly what your retirement money is invested in? What are the fees and hidden expenses? As HR for details and I hope you will share them here.

Since you do 'side-work' it's critical to set aside the sum that will be due in taxes each and every pay. You are entitled to have a self employed retirement plan, from that income which reduces the tax bite. If you often have a major tax rebate most years, it's a good idea to make a plan for those sums. How do you currently handle irregular bills like vehicle tabs, maintenance as suggested in the manual, medical/dental co pays, clothes, personal grooming, electronic updates/new toys etc?

sorry, so many questions but we truly wish to be helpful

In the past I have just winged it when it came to irregular bills and hoped for the best. I am now budgeting $100 a month for these expenses, which gets placed in savings so I dont touch it. I will check with HR about my 401k options. It is through Fidelity and I have looked at it online, but it is all over my head.

Welcome fellow single 30something! I think its smart to start by tracking your actual expenses and saving while making debt repayment a priority. Some other thoughts I have.....

Since you don't have credit card debt and it sounds like your student loans are in good standing, why not consider paying above your car payment? 2 years may not seem long, but being done with payments might mean you can reduce your insurance coverages and save some money. This of course depends on the age/value of the vehicle.

Regarding your cell phone, if you haven't already, shop around for a better deal. There are so many unlimited talk/text plans out there and if you have internet at home/work there's no need to pay for it on your phone. Don't be suckered in by the latest "smart" phone either, you can be plenty happy with a "dumb" phone =)

And more just me being nosy..... when you say you used to spend over $700 a month on food were you including dates? I wonder because my guy friends all swear men spend more on dating, while my gal pals and I beg to differ.

  13. llabruce4 Says:

A lot of that was money spent on dates, but also I was just eating out two times a day because I work long hours and was too lazy to cook something. ( Have stopped that now) To give my two cents on the spending thing, I think guys over do it at the start and spend more than they should/pay for everything, but as relationship gets older it becomes closer to 50-50. ( Though I still pay more times than not just because it feels I should, if I am the one taking her to eat)

Yeah I hear you on the working long hours and being too lazy to cook. I'm trying to get out of that habit now. I'll be sure to bring up your thoughts regarding dating and spending, next time my friends and I have that chat. Sounds like the new gal you're seeing prefers more modest spending so that's good while you work on your goals =)

Your rent sounds very cheap to me...probably your part of the country.

What is the interest rate on your student loans?

Have you considered perhaps doing some cooking on a day off and then freezing what you make like in serving size containers? Then, to eat it, all you have to do is thaw it out and warm it up on the stove or in a microwave. That could seriously help you out with your food budget.
