A fresh start

December 8th, 2014 at 04:25 pm

So here I am, a 34 year old child just now beginning to focus on my finances. This blog is mainly my way to hold myself accountable, but also hopefully can help someone else who is trying to start this journey, or at least share some ideas. For the past ten years, I have made poor decision after poor decision, and am now digging myself out of a hole that I can only blame myself for.

My first step has been starting a budget (mint.com), and almost a month into it, it is nice to see where my money has been going. Now it is all about cutting spending and starting an emergency fund. My goal is to get $6,000 saved in next 12 months. I will post about each day's struggles as well as a weekly update about where I sit savings wise. I would love any followers, or advice I can get.

Laurence

Welcome! Start small and be realistic. For me the biggest obstacles for success: unrealistic goals which led to frustration and feelings of defeat.

Welcome Laurence, delighted you've made the decision to focus on your finances, took the all important 1st tangible step goes by using mint.com to see where the money goes and start a budget. Your new blog will surely help to hold yourself accountable and you can count on us to cheer every step forward.

I wonder if you've started your EF by opening a no fee, dedicated, savings account. Getting that initial $ 1,000. is key. It's where so many of us started. You might like to make it automatic to have a specific sum transfer to savings each pay, right off the top for that EF. It's called 'Paying Yourself First.'

Welcome to SA! You will find lots of like-minded folks here willing to pitch in and lend a helping hand. We are all in a constant state of learning. If you want to get some ideas on where to start, could you give us some numbers, like a current budget, current debt, savings, etc. and we could give you some ideas.

Welcome! If the goal is $6000 for the year, that means $500 each month. Will you save it out of one paycheck each month or divide it by the number of paychecks?

Thanks for all the replies. To answer some of your questions, my goal is to save 250 from each paycheck, and I did open a savings account strictly for an EF ( as well as a 52 week challenge). The savings will be tough, especially to start, but I have decided to help a friend who owns a body shop a couple nights a week to help fund the savings goal as well.
